Law, Ethics, & News Literacy
Laws and ethics in journalism build authenticity in one's writing while ensuring a piece conveys the news accurately and responsibly. The ethics of journalism can include specific choices of words, photos, sources, headlines, and quotes. The reporter's job is to do justice to a story and its audience. Thus, I believe these principles are crucial to good journalism. These guidelines are also relevant when one decides what details to report, as a good journalist can balance between honorably delivering a story while being fair to its sources and subjects. Ethically choosing between damaging one's reputation or objectively delivering facts and letting the reader formulate opinions, differentiates an amateur journalist from a true professional. As a student journalist, I do my best to practice good journalism by finding trustworthy sources, maintaining accurate content information, and responsibly capturing video footage and photos.
